Book 12: Volcanoes: Hot Rock in a Cool World

Levels: 3-4
Contextual strands: Planet Earth and beyond icon. Planet Earth and beyond

Synopsis

Studying volcanoes is popular in New Zealand schools, partly because volcanic features are common in our landscape and partly because of the dramatic events, and often disasters, associated with their eruptions. However, some of the science involved is complex and unable to be observed by students, for example, plate tectonics. For this reason, a good starting point when teaching about volcanoes is their observable features in the landscape, and the associated types of rocks and soils. Seeing the patterns in these features can lead to explaining the science that causes those patterns to occur.
