Resources that support you to plan your classroom programme. All resources are based on The NZ Curriculum.
Building science concepts
Building science concepts is a series of 64 booklets for levels 1 to 4 of the curriculum. Each booklet is based around a theme and includes science information for teachers supported by a sequenced series of classroom activities.
The booklets were sent to all schools from 2001–2004.
Each online resource lists: concept overview, links with other titles in the series, related Assessment Resource Bank (ARB) tasks to assess the big ideas in each activity.
Nature of science teaching activities
Nature of science teaching activities consists of 37 classroom teaching activities for curriculum levels 1-7.
- Activities can be sorted by: curriculum level, contextual strand, nature of science, topic, and activity name.
- Each activity lists: what you need, activity focus, exploration tasks, reflection tasks, and activity resources.
Science capability teaching resources
Science capability teaching resources – Search through 74 teaching resources from the Assessment Resource Banks (ARBs), Connected Series, Building Science Concepts series.
- Resources can be filtered by: capability, nature of science achievement aim, contextual strand, level, and keyword.
- Supporting information for developing the five science capabilities is included with each resource.
Enriching Local Curriculum resources
Enriching Local Curriculum (ELC) resources lists contractors across New Zealand who provide hands-on and interactive science learning experiences for students.
NZ organisations teaching resources
New Zealand resources and short videos for junior primary to senior secondary level.
The University of Canterbury science outreach programme contains:
- learning resources for all levels of the curriculum
- outreach events including careers events, professional development workshops for teachers, hands-on interactive workshops for students
- school visits with expert speakers for schools in Canterbury
Royal Society | Supporting teaching and learning
The Royal Society supports science education with programmes and resources for students and teachers.
Information on a range of science topics lesson plans, interactive games, videos, virtual tours, maps, research, and collections and databases.
NZ Transport agency teacher resources
- Science in motion – Classroom activities for years 1-10 supporting learners to engage with the big ideas of science. Topics include: gravity and friction, forces and energy, designing for safety.

- Unit for years 9–10 covering level 5 Physical world – force and motion in the context of road safety and stopping.
- NCEA Level 1 Physics internal assessment for Achievement Standard 90936: Demonstrate understanding of the physics of an application.
Ministry for Primary Industries teacher resources
For levels 1–5 of The New Zealand Curriculum, these resources support science, health and physical education, social studies, and technology. They explore how three connected systems – animal welfare, biosecurity, and food – support New Zealand’s primary industries.
Resources are linked to Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries (SOPI) reports.
Level 4 and 5 science learning activities that have a focus on the kiwifruit industry. Downloadable PDFs for the following science activities:

Resources on animal issues for teachers and students in New Zealand secondary schools, which prompt reflection on empathy and compassion. Resources are for use within the NCEA framework for Y11–13.
Literacy resources integrated with science
Literacy Online | Instruction series – Connected series
The Connected series promotes scientific, technological, and mathematical literacy. The texts are aligned to curriculum levels 2, 3 and 4 for students in years 4–8. Teacher support materials are available as downloadable PDFs and MS Word documents.
Search through the School Journals, Junior Journals, School Journal Story Library, and Ready to Read stories and articles for science related articles and stories.
Applications in action (PDF 3 MB)
Students in Years 9–11 will engage with Applications’ real-life stories.
These titles are no longer in print, but copies may be still available in your school.
