Synopsis

Music offers a context for concepts of sound that is familiar to children and that they can easily relate to. The concepts on ways in which musical sounds are produced and reach our ears can be investigated and explored in activities that are both relevant to and extend children’s experiences. Properties of Sound: How Sound-makers and Musical Instruments Work , (book 19) the companion book for levels 3 and 4, addresses more complex concepts of sound and uses music as a context for activities.

Links with other titles in the series

Book 18 is aimed at Levels 1 - 2, and Book 19 at levels 3-4. They explore the phenomenon of sound, specifically acoustic music sounds. Confident teachers may wish to extend the subject, for example into electronic music, computer-generated sounds, 'white noise', human speech, and sounds of nature. The topic links to the Material World (materials used to create, reflect, transmit, absorb, or enhance sound).
