New resources to support science education
This section presents new resources in three areas of dynamic change possibilities for science education in New Zealand schools in order to develop science capabilities for citizenship as stated in the New Zealand Curriculum.
The Ministry of Education endorsed this work to support the ongoing implementation of the science learning area of NZC . The resources show how to weave the Nature of Science strand and the key competencies into science teaching and learning.
How can teachers help students develop science capabilities for citizenship?
The idea of how science capabilities link directly to the key competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum is expanded on this page: Key competencies are clusters of capabilities
How might digital technologies transform science education?
Digital technologies have the potential to transform school science learning - but how?
A discussion document around digital technologies and future-oriented science education was designed to stimulate lively conversations about this important question.

Where is the research evidence?
The research that informed these three sets of resources can be accessed on the NZCER website. A series of research reports were generated over the two years of the project.
What got this work started?
The Chief Science Adviser raised some challenging questions in his 2011 report. The Ministry of Education responded by funding three new science education projects. His questions were:
- How can we “engage and enthuse” more young New Zealanders in science?
- Is the science we teach getting students ready to address serious questions we will all face in the future?
- How might science education help New Zealand's development as a smart, innovative, knowledge-oriented country?
All the resources linked to this new section address these important questions.
